Terms of Use

Thank you for using Maya.

These Terms of Use apply to your use of our speech API and any other services we make available to you, together with our websites (together, the “Services”). They form an agreement between you and Maya Research. By using the Services, you agree to these Terms.

Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect and use personal information. It does not form part of these Terms, but you should read it.

Who we are

Maya Research builds speech models for Indian languages. We collect our own datasets and train models that speak Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Indian English. You can read more at mayaresearch.ai.

Registration and access

Minimum age. You must be at least 18 years old, or old enough to enter a contract where you live, to use the Services on your own behalf.

How access works today. There is no public sign-up. We issue API keys on request, and access is granted at our discretion. Give us accurate information when you ask for one. If you are requesting access for an organisation, you confirm you have authority to accept these Terms on its behalf.

Keep your key secret. An API key authenticates as you, and you are responsible for everything done with it. Treat it like a password: keep it server-side, never in a browser bundle or a public repository. Tell us immediately if you think it has leaked and we will revoke it. Usage on a leaked key is still your usage.

Using the Services

What you can do. Subject to these Terms, you may use the Services to generate speech, including for commercial purposes.

What you cannot do. You may not:

• Generate speech that impersonates a real person in a way that could deceive someone — including public figures — without that person’s consent.
• Use the Services for fraud, scams, phishing, or any automated calling that hides the fact that the voice is synthetic where the law requires you to disclose it.
• Generate speech that is unlawful, that harasses or defames someone, that sexualises minors, or that incites violence.
• Use output to train, fine-tune, distil or otherwise develop a competing speech model.
• Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the weights, architecture or training data of our models, except where the law expressly permits it.
• Resell raw access to the Services as an undifferentiated pass-through, or share your key with third parties so they can call the API.
• Circumvent rate limits, concurrency limits, credit accounting, or any other protective measure, or otherwise interfere with the Services.

Disclosure that a voice is synthetic

Our voices are convincing, which is the point and also the risk. Where a listener could reasonably believe they are hearing a human — automated calls, voice agents, support lines — you are responsible for disclosing that the voice is synthetic if the law where your listener lives requires it. We do not make that determination for you.

Content

Input and Output. The text you send is “Input”. The audio we return is “Output”. Together they are “Content”.

Ownership. As between you and us, you keep whatever rights you have in your Input, and you own the Output generated for you. We assign to you whatever right, title and interest we have in that Output. You may use it commercially, including in products you sell.

Your responsibility for Input. You confirm you have the rights and permissions needed for the text you send us, and that generating speech from it does not break the law or these Terms.

Similarity. Speech synthesis is not unique per user. Another customer sending similar text with the same voice will receive similar audio. Our assignment above does not extend to anyone else’s Output.

How we use Content. We use Content to provide, operate, secure and debug the Services, and to comply with the law. Where we want to use your Content to improve our models, we will ask, and you can decline without losing access.

Voices and likeness

The voices we ship are ours to license to you. They are built from data we collected with the consent of the speakers involved. Nothing in these Terms gives you the right to claim a Maya voice as your own brand voice to the exclusion of others, or to register it as a trade mark.

Our intellectual property

We and our licensors own the Services, including the models, weights, software and the Maya name and marks. These Terms grant you a licence to use the Services, not ownership of them.

Feedback

If you send us feedback or suggestions, we may use them without restriction or payment. You are not obliged to send us any.

Suspension and termination

You may stop using the Services at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms, if we are required to by law, or if your use creates risk to us, to other customers, or to anyone else. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right.

If you think we have suspended your account in error, write to dheemanth@mayaresearch.ai and we will look at it.

Disclaimer of warranties

The Services are provided “as is”. To the extent permitted by law, we and our licensors make no warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Services will be uninterrupted, accurate, or error free.

Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, neither we nor our licensors are liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages, including lost profits, lost goodwill, or lost data, even if we were told such damages were possible. Our total liability under these Terms will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us for the Service that gave rise to the claim in the twelve months before the liability arose, or ten thousand rupees (₹10,000).

Some jurisdictions do not allow these exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

Indemnity

If you are a business, you will indemnify us and our personnel against claims, losses and costs (including legal fees) arising from your use of the Services or your breach of these Terms.

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as the Services and the law change. If a change materially affects you, we will give you reasonable notice by email before it takes effect. If you do not agree, stop using the Services.

General

Assignment. You may not assign these Terms without our consent. We may assign them to an affiliate or a successor to our business.

Severability. If any part of these Terms is unenforceable, the rest stays in force.

No waiver. If we do not enforce a provision straight away, we have not given up the right to enforce it later.

Trade controls. You must comply with applicable export control and sanctions laws.

Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of India.
